Julia Hsieh was born in Zhudong Township’s Hakka village in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Her first languages are “xi ien” and “hoi liuk”, two of the most commonly used Hakka dialects in Taiwan. She worked for a trading company in Taipei until moving back to Zhudong after marriage. Julia worked at Microtek International Inc. for 13 years, contributing to the company’s product planning and marketing. She also spent two years at Altek Corporation managing administrative tasks. In December 1997, Julia immigrated to Canada, and in April, 1999, she settled in Vancouver and started working in the tourism industry. From 2011 to 2012, she was the President of the Vancouver Taiwan Hakka Association, and has put great effort into bringing Hakka people together and promoting Hakka culture in Vancouver. Now she is a consultant of the Hakka Association and a coordinator of the Overseas Community Affairs Council. Through this year’s “Experience HAKKA”, she will lead you to explore the Hakka culture by introducing and sharing the stories behind Hakka cuisine.
